I took a course on sustainability this semester and the most important thing I learned was that sustainability is not just about saving the trees or riding a bike rather than driving a car. Those are very crucial no doubt, but most importantly it is about ecological sustainability, economic opportunity and social equity. The foundation of sustainability is built off of three key dimensions: economic, environmental and social. The world around us is so interconnected and it is important that we are able to visualize and comprehend that, so we are able to see the impact that each decision we make has on the community and world around us.

I also learned that through education we can enlighten those around us in order to make a change for the better. Education is the most important tool you and I can use in order to change the world around us in order to function more sustainability. Through this outcroppings outlet I hope to educate those that read this to think of sustainability as a broad topic that is a complex system with many moving parts, you being one of them.

If you are interested in these ideas, I encourage you to read the book “Sustainability: Principles and Practice” By Margaret Robertson, where she addresses these concepts in depth.
